In February, 2019, following her keynote for the 199th Susan B. Anthony Birthday Celebration, Dr. Irma McClaurin, Black Feminist and Community Engagement Specialist, spoke at the University of Rochester. Her topic was “Innovative’ and ‘Authentic’ University-Community Outreach and Engagement: A Case Study of University of Minnesota’s Urban Research and Outreach-Engagement Center.” A crowd of about 40 people from campus and the community listened and participated in a dialogue with Dr. McClaurin on community engagement.
During her visit, in addition to the talk, McClaurin conducted writing and pedagogical workshops: for faculty of color– “Writing for Advocacy, to Save Your Life, and Become More Resilient:” and for interested faculty”, she completed a workshop on “Guerrilla Teaching.”
There was time set aside to meet with student leaders for a conversation at the Frederick Douglass House at URochester.
Her visit was jointly sponsored by the Susan B. Anthony Institute for Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies, and the Rochester Center for Community Leadership.
